Description

A beautifully sculptural circa 1950s hat in a soft powder blue, created from translucent horsehair braid arranged in sweeping concentric layers around the crown.

The design is constructed over a lightweight open mesh foundation, with overlapping bands of fine horsehair braid carefully shaped into graduated horizontal curves. Each layer projects slightly from the crown, creating a wonderfully dimensional, almost architectural silhouette. The translucent material allows the underlying structure to subtly show through and gives the hat an exceptionally light, airy appearance.

A coordinating powder blue fabric band encircles the base of the crown, softly folded and finished with a restrained overlapping detail at the front. The monochromatic construction keeps the emphasis on the remarkable sculptural form and texture.

Horsehair braid became an especially effective millinery material during the mid-century period because it could hold dramatic curves and dimensional shapes while remaining extremely lightweight.
